Yet Another Todo App

YATA is Yet Another Todo App.

Untitled 1

You start at a high level with all your tasks in a tree of tasks and sub-tasks. If you check one off it gets striked out and will automatically be deleted in 24 hours. You can edit tasks. Here you have the big picture.

Untitled 2

Next, you can look at just the leaves, the things that need to be done at some point. These are the end tasks which have no children. You can highlight important leaves here.

Untitled 3

Last, you can focus on just the leaves that have been highlighted and work on just those today. You can go through, check off those tasks and tomorrow return to the overview to choose what to work on again. This view shows only the things you want to work on, and hides the complexity of everything else that’s going on.

If you want to play with it, YATM is here.

Save yourself from Reddit, Hacker News, Slashdot…

As Paul Graham writes, everything is becoming more addictive.

This includes the websites which waste most of my time on the planet; reddit, HN, slashdot and others. But, you can use your long range planning to cut short your lizard brain from going click-click-click all day. How? By redirecting reddit to something more useful.

What we can do is this: Whenever you type ‘’ in to your browser, we can redirect to something which blocks reddit and reminds you to try and be more productive.

On a mac, type this;

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist

That will start the apache web server. Next;

sudo nano /Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html.en

Edit your index file to look like this;

<script type=”text/javascript”>
window.location = “”
</head><body><h1>It works!</h1></body></html>

Now any hit to your apache will redirect to this image:

Working Car

Try this by going to http://localhost/ in a browser. Now we need to redirect sites which suck up all your time;

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Keep the stuff in there, and add this to the end;

This causes your hostname resolver to think that reddit is running on your machine. Which then redirects in to cat territory.

That’s it. Now when you try to browse some time-sucking website you’ll be reminded that it’s better to go do some work.

Great contra-article on VC

A nice article by Melanie;

A little anecdote: I have a friend of mine who runs a relatively well-known startup in NYC. He literally LIVES at the office. I’m serious, he moved in. And before that, he slept on the couch most nights. And, after working this hard for almost 2 years, guess how much revenue this startup is generating? Zero. Not a fucking penny. After 2 years of work! Now, I understand that they are trying to build a massive user base with network effects, blah blah blah, but, I’m sorry, that is absolutely fucking insane. I could never see myself living my life that way. I am just not built for it. To put in that many years of your life, and thousands of hours of work, for what will most likely turn out to be an unsuccessful startup, is just crazy to me. But, from reading the tech press, you would think this is one of the hottest startups in New York!
